May 2026 — International Desk

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring Uganda a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” after a rare and fast-moving strain of the virus spread across parts of Central Africa.

According to WHO and Africa CDC officials, the outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus — a rare variant for which there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted treatments. Health authorities say this significantly complicates efforts to contain the disease.

Initial cases were identified in Ituri Province in northeastern DRC, particularly around the mining towns of Mongbwalu and Rwampara. Laboratory testing confirmed Ebola infection in multiple samples collected from patients suffering severe fever, weakness, vomiting, and hemorrhagic symptoms.

As of May 17, officials have reported:

  • More than 300 suspected infections
  • At least 80–88 suspected deaths
  • Confirmed cross-border transmission into Uganda
  • Rising concern about undetected community spread in densely populated urban areas including Goma and Kampala (PBS)

Regional and Global Response

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has convened an emergency regional coordination meeting involving multiple African governments and international partners. Authorities are focusing on:

  • Rapid laboratory testing
  • Cross-border surveillance
  • Contact tracing
  • Emergency treatment centers
  • Protective equipment deployment
  • Community awareness campaigns

WHO officials warned that ongoing armed conflict and weak healthcare infrastructure in eastern DRC could accelerate transmission and make containment more difficult. Several affected regions are remote and lack reliable transportation or medical capacity.

Health experts also expressed concern that the outbreak may already be larger than official figures suggest, due to delayed detection and underreporting in rural communities.

Why the 2026 Outbreak Is Different

Unlike previous Ebola emergencies dominated by the Zaire strain, the Bundibugyo variant has appeared only a handful of times since it was first identified in Uganda in 2007. Scientists say the limited historical data and lack of approved countermeasures make the current outbreak especially dangerous.

The outbreak has revived memories of the devastating 2014–2016 West African Ebola epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people and exposed major weaknesses in global outbreak preparedness.

International aid agencies are now urging governments to increase funding for emergency response operations, vaccine research, and medical logistics before the outbreak spreads further across the region.
